in defense of bad queer representation
who is allowed to be flawed and still worthy of love, and who isn’t?
Thank you for joining me in the Inner Parlour today. This is a subsection of my newsletter, Lilith’s Muse, where we’ll have deeper conversations in a smaller setting. So please, take a seat by the fire. You are in good company here.
Happy Pride! I hope this month is kind to everyone, most especially my siblings under the LGBTQ+ umbrella. There are a myriad of things to be concerned about in the world—especially regarding the safety and rights of our trans siblings, and especially seeing as a state of emergency has been declared for LGBTQ+ Americans—but I hope there is still some time and space for rest, celebration, and community despite this.
(Personally, it’s my first pride month as a lesbian, and I may or may not have gone all out with my outfit for the Philly Pride March because of it.)
But the topic of the hour today is more about fictional queers. Specifically, it is about the kinds of queers that are—quite literally—bad representation.
